Born in Pike County, Alabama, Peter Crawford Jackson (1848-1930) attended the University of Alabama before enlisting in the 61st Alabama Infantry Regiment of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Following his release from a Union prison at the end of the war, he moved to Lampasas County, Texas, and joined Company E of the Texas Rangers in 1878. In November 1835, Texas lawmakers created a corps of Texas Rangers to guard the frontier between the Brazos and Trinity Rivers. During the Texas Revolution and republic era, the Rangers were used principally for protection against Native American raids.
